The photographs in The Architecture of Space explore the perception and representation of space, as explored by new American artists working within the field of photography. Set within the context of dynamic social change driven by digital technology, the selected images go some way to evidence the collapse between public and private space and how this is articulated through photography.

Further, the selected artists embody the state of contemporary photography itself; in that their artworks are not easily packaged into identifiable genres, but embody the collapse of those categories. This can be seen through the wide-reaching visual strategies employed, as well as the imaginative modes of production that bring attention to the photograph as object.

An important thread which links each of the photographs, is the manner in which the photographers have maintained the enduring tropes of photography—especially the hegemony of the frame—whilst firmly placing their images into a contemporary social/technological framework.
